抄録: The purpose of this study was to clarify the most adequate class size for Japanese elementary school children, asking the teachers from those schools about the number of pupils for adequate, minimum, and maximum class size. Three factors: subject, length of teachers’teaching career, and pupil’s year grade were considered. The following results were obtained. ①the subject “classroom activities” could be run for the most pupils in the maximum class size, while experiment-based subjects afforded for the least pupils in the minimum size. ②the numbers of the pupils for mimimum class size were almost the same concerning length of teaching career of the teachers but were different for the adequate and maximum size. That is, asking for the adequate class size, the backbone teachers thought they could manage the most pupils at classroom activities and knowledgebased subjects. Asking maximum size, the backbone teachers thougt similarly at classroom activities, knowledge-based and experiment-based subjects. Younger teachers thougt they could manage the most pupils at investigation-based and skill-based subjects. ③Finally, smaller size was desirable in the lower grade class.
