Abstract: This study explores the procedures in problem-solving discussions. Specifically, I examine how the interlocutors advance the discussion. The discussions were held among ten groups of undergraduate students. Each group composed of four members who spoke for twenty minutes on possible catch phrases for their school. The discussion samples were analyzed qualitatively using a discourse analysis framework. In order to explicate the procedures in the discussion, I divided each discussion into three stages: the opening, development, and closing stages. In the opening stage, the participants use such procedural utterances as signaling the opening of the discussion, sharing and evaluating the problems, and proposing discussion procedures. In the development stage, they use utterances involving prompting exchanges, returning from digressions, summarizing the ongoing discussion, and reconfirming the task. In the closing stage, the participants’utterances involve reviewing the appropriateness of the prior discussion, prompting and drawing a conclusion.
